In many places, performances of works by the great Finnish symphonic composer Jean Sibelius are still rare, even in major musical metropolises. Not so with the Luzerner Sinfonieorchester: one or the other of Sibelius’s seven symphonies was repeatedly on the program - initially to the surprise, but more and more to the great satisfaction of the audience. Now there is a relatively “unknown Sibelius” to discover: his six humoresques for violin and orchestra. Lovable little pieces that line up to form a musically impressive cycle. The second symphony by Sibelius will then be performed. It is undoubtedly the most popular of his seven: a highly romantic work that is extraordinarily rich in melodic invention, crowned by a rousing, hymn-like finale.
