A Drum-Circle is a rhythmic field of experimenting, open to everyone regardless of age or pre-experience. We explore basic musical elements, find playfully new paths and unfold our creative potential within improvisation. This new format commences on Octobre 15, 2020 and is led by the much experienced rhythm teacher Thomas Viehweger from Lucerne.
Every Thursday from 6.30-7.45 p.m. | Orchesterhaus | Arsenalstrasse 28b, Kriens.
The term «drum circles» was developed by the American Arthur Hull and describes a type of communal, low-threshold music-making. In a drum circle, beginners and professionals, children, singles, grandparents, couples, families and the curious meet to experience and create rhythm together. In the process, a lot of creative potential and expressive joy can unfold. The aim is to get the music grooving in the course of the game and to hear it in an increasingly differentiated way.
A wide range of rhythm instruments is available: Hand drums, bass drums, Afro-Latin instruments, various small percussion instruments... The participants playfully try out different musical roles: Maintaining a rhythm, varying, improvising, giving ground, soling, connecting, reacting, giving impulses, listening. The drum circle leader acts as a facilitator and «enabler». Similar to a conductor, he coordinates the interplay, creates the framework, gives impulses for interaction and serves what brings groove and flow.
Previous experience is not necessary. Experienced players as well as beginners are picked up where they are. Regular participation is beneficial to the ensemble and therefore desirable, but not a condition. Spontaneous participants who want to take part in individual evenings are also welcome.

I have been leading drum circles for almost 20 years. This form of playing together is one of the most vital and lively things I practice in my work as a music mediator.
