DESCRIPTION:In 1984\, a twelve-year-old made his sensational debut in Moscow. It was Evgeny Kissin playing Chopin’s two piano concertos. Less than two years later\, a young soprano caused a furore in Salzburg. It was Renée Fleming making her debut as Konstanze in Mozart’s “Entführung aus dem Serail”. The two of them have long since ranked among the world‘s musical elite – the celebrated American diva and the venerated Russian master pianist. Fans regularly travel half way around the world to see their idols live. As part of the piano festival “Le piano symphonique”\, they can now be seen together on stage – an absolute rarity. Both of them devote themselves here entirely to the music of Sergei Rachmaninoff\, who was once\, thanks to his estate in Hertenstein\, a quasi resident of Lucerne. The most beautiful examples of his rich song oeuvre are to be found on the programme\, along with two outstanding piano works: Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Sonata and the “5 Morceaux de Fantaisie”\, which he composed as a 19-year-old\, performed in public throughout his life\, and even recorded on piano rolls and shellac. The second of the five Morceaux – the popular Prelude in C-sharp minor – became world-famous and is probably Rachmaninoff’s best known work.
