SUMMARY:Glass & Mahler - and the world beyond
DESCRIPTION:When Franz Schubert\, at the age of seventeen\, set the Goethe poem “Gretchen am Spinnrade” in 1814\, the Romantic German piano song was born and a new era dawned. “Du bist die Ruh” and “Nacht und Träume” are among his most accomplished musical dreamscapes. The same is true of Mahler’s “Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen”. It is a deeply moving farewell to the outward “worldly turmoil”\, a retreat into one’s own self\, into one’s own song. “Urlicht” also pronounces earthly man‘s longing for heaven and the “eternally blissful life”. For his 75 songs with piano\, Richard Strauss also deserves a worthy place in the pantheon of important Lied composers. Martin Achrainer and Maki Namekawa crown their atmospheric song programme with a world premiere by Philip Glass. As one of the most performed living composers of our time\, he confronts for the first time the classical Lied in its purest form: voice and piano.
