SUMMARY:Romantic worlds of feeling
DESCRIPTION:“I want to burst with music and do nothing but compose\,” wrote Robert Schumann during his work on the “Kreisleriana”\, a high-intensity piano cycle full of emotional exuberance\, very much similar to the bizarrely demonic Kapellmeister Kreisler in E. T. A. Hoffmann’s famous novella from which Schumann drew his inspiration. The individual scenes of “Kreisleriana” can also be interpreted as an autobiographical reflection of his endangered status as an artist. Romantic emotional worlds\,  feverish nervosity\, Hoffmannesque fantasy and rapturous élan come together in this music\, which is both enigmatic and irresistible. Schumann said of his “Arabesque” that it was “weak\, and for ladies”. Whatever the case\, it is an endearing piece full of tender\, romantic elegance. Half a century later\, Josef Suk wrote his Six Piano Pieces. This is idyllic music\, partly in a melancholy Bohemian tone. The legacy of Smetana and above all Antonín Dvořák – Suk’s father-in-law – is unmistakable.
