SUMMARY:Sanderling conducts Bruckner’s «Romantic»
DESCRIPTION:On its path of successively acquiring the large-scale late Romantic repertoire\, the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra is placing a new focus on Anton Bruckner’s symphonies. Long gone are the days when controversies about his person and his work were the order of the day\, when he was called «half genius\, half fool» (Gustav Mahler) or ridiculed as «God’s minstrel». He may have been deeply religious\, but his symphonies are not musical high masses. Instead\, they stand for innovation\, forging ahead into the 20th century\, the first «modern age» . Incidentally\, when Bruckner bought a train ticket to Switzerland in Vienna on 13th August 1880\, it was clear that the Rigi would be on the itinerary. In Lucerne he played the organ\, on Lake Lucerne he crossed over to Vitznau\, and then the usual tourist programme followed: a ride on the cogwheel railway\, sunset in the evening\, sunrise in the morning. «There was a bit of fog when we got up\, but at dawn after 5.30am it was completely clear\,» Bruckner noted in his diary. He also seemed to enjoy the legendary views. «One looks over low or sloping mountain peaks to other distant ones; the more distant the others\, the better; likewise the steeper the better.» One could almost transfer this image to the monumental\, rugged architecture of his symphonies.
