Jana Zemp-Kupsky

Biography

Various awards and scholarships such as the Kiwanis Culture Prize and the A. and F. Rosenberg Scholarship have enabled her to participate in various master classes in Europe and the USA.

Jana Zemp was born in Basel in 1973. She began studying the violin at the age of four with her father, Jan Kupsky, and later continued her training with Th. Kraus and F. Zöldy. In 1990 she passed the entrance examination to the Basel Academy of Music and, after studying with P. Novsak and A. v. Wijnkoop, received her teaching diploma in 1994.

Following a summer course in South Carolina (USA), she followed her teacher Victor Danchenko to the Peabody Institute of Music in Baltimore, Maryland, where she completed the Graduate Performance Diploma in 1996. In order to further refine her training, Jana Zemp subsequently applied to study with Igor Ozim in Bern and was admitted to his soloist class in 1997, graduating with the Soloist Diploma in 1999.

Various awards and scholarships – including the Kiwanis Cultural Prize and the A. and F. Rosenberg Scholarship – enabled her to take part in masterclasses across Europe and the United States.

For 21 years she served as Associate Principal in the Luzerner Sinfonieorchester, helping to shape the sound of the string section in this role before choosing to continue her work in the tutti section.

In her free time, Jana Zemp enjoys spending time with her family and going horseback riding. She has a broad interest in culture and a particular affection for animals.
