Sevgi Varol
Biography
Sevgi Varol is a bassoon and contrabassoon player, trained in Ankara and Zurich (ZHdK, graduating with distinction). She has performed with ensembles such as Opernhaus Zürich, Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, and Tampere Philharmonic. After engagements at Musikkollegium Winterthur, she has been a member of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra since February 2026.
Turkish bassoonist Sevgi Varol began her musical journey at the State Conservatory of Hacettepe University with Gülnur Kurt and completed her Bachelor’s degree at Bilkent University with Ozan Evruk in Ankara. She then continued her studies at the Zurich University of the Arts, completing two master’s programs with Matthias Racz and a Master in Orchestral Performance with Giorgio Mandolesi, graduating with distinction.
Her artistic development was supported by scholarships from the Lyra Foundation, the Dr. Nejat F. Eczacıbaşı Foundation, and the IKSV Music Festival’s “Rising Female Stars of Tomorrow” project. As a chamber and orchestral musician, she has performed at the Davos Festival – Young Artists in Concert and the Moritzburg Festival. Engagements have taken her to MusicAeterna, Paax GNP / Impossible Orchestra, Opernhaus Zürich, Orchestra della
Svizzera Italiana, Zürcher Symphoniker, Basel Festival Orchestra, Tampere Philharmonic, and Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie Konstanz.
In the 2022/23 season, she was engaged at the Musikkollegium Winterthur as 2nd bassoon and contrabassoon (fixed-term contract), and from 2023 to 2026 as deputy principal bassoon and contrabassoon (permanent position). Since February 2026, she
has been a member of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra.
