Beethoven’s piano concertos were written over a period of about 20 years. The first, published as No. 2 in B flat major, op. 19, dates back to 1793. The second, published as No. 1 in C major, op. 15, was completed in 1800. The third was premiered in 1803 and the fourth in 1807. The fifth received its world premiere in Leipzig in 1811. The four overtures recorded here were written during a similar period of time and create atmospheric counterparts to the piano concertos.
