Program
  • Ignacy Jan Paderewski (1860 – 1941)

    • Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in A minor Op. 17

  • Johannes Brahms (1833 – 1897)

    • Symphony No. 4 in E minor op. 98

Legends surround Paderewski’s Piano Concerto, and fans of the piano inevitably go into raptures when it is mentioned, yet it is practically never performed. Perhaps because pianists are afraid of the immense technical challenges? Paderewski was one of the leading pianists of his time and as a nimble-fingered keyboard virtuoso knew all the tricks. It is often forgotten that he also had great success as a composer, both in the Old and the New World. And as if that were not enough, in 1919 he was appointed the first prime minister of newly independent Poland. His was without doubt a unique artistic career. Víkingur Ólafsson, the Icelandic master pianist, also stands out for his unconventional approach to music. He not only makes music, but talks about it – even during the concert –  and laughter is also allowed. In addition, he has a special flair for contemporary music, which is in very safe hands with him. Who knows, maybe Víkingur Ólafsson will one day become Prime Minister of Iceland …
