As you know, Julia Fischer is a brilliant violinist, an exceptional performer who can be entrusted with anything – even Britten’s violin concerto, which still rather lags behind the popular Romantic warhorses in the public’s favour. Wrongly so, as Julia Fischer proves with panache. She lovingly shapes Britten’s cantilenas with her controlled, clear-toned vibrato, and our amazement at her technical mastery is almost forgotten in the face of her sheer authority as a player. Suddenly you understand why Britten considered his violin concerto “without question my best piece”. For many violin virtuosos, it is one of the greatest and most beautiful challenges in the entire repertoire – certainly one of the most impressive instrumental works Britten wrote. It is a well-known fact that the Luzerner Sinfonieorchester, known for its dedication to traditional Classical music, is gradually taking on new late Romantic, large-scale repertoire. On this occasion, works by Britten and Shostakovich. And with chief conductor Michael Sanderling at the helm, one of our most skilled and distinguished interpreters of Shostakovich, this will undoubtedly be a memorable event.
