Hänsel und Gretel (Engelbert Humperdinck) – Premiere

‘Hansel and Gretel’ is fresh, colorful and playful in Lucerne. It is an evening to revel in, to laugh and be amazed – for young and old alike,” was the SRF’s verdict after the acclaimed premiere in the 23/24 season. The revival of Engelbert Humperdinck’s fairytale opera in the run-up to Christmas offers everyone who has not yet seen it the opportunity to see for themselves – and everyone else the chance to experience it again. Father Peter is a broom maker, the family is poor. And so for weeks there is nothing but dry bread. In the Grimm fairy tale, the stepmother therefore suggests taking the children into the dense forest and leaving them alone there. Fortunately, things are different in Humperdinck’s opera! Here, numerous good spirits watch over Hansel and Gretel and give them the certainty from the very beginning that the exciting fairytale adventure will have a happy ending. They are always accompanied by Humperdinck’s fantastic composition, a Christmas classic that will delight the whole family.
