Biography
Barış Önel was born in Ankara, where he began his musical education at the Hacettepe University Ankara State Conservatory with Tahsin Arslan at the age of 11. Further studies took him to the University of Music and Theatre “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” in Leipzig.
Barış Önel was born in Ankara, where he began his musical education at the Hacettepe University Ankara State Conservatory with Tahsin Arslan at the age of 11. Further studies took him to the University of Music and Theatre “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” in Leipzig where he studied with Jörg Michael Thomé. He gained his Master’s degree with distinction at the Basel Academy of Music as a student of Sergio Azzolini.
He gained orchestral experience during his studies in Leipzig with the Turkish National Youth Philharmonic Orchestra and the Young German Philharmonic Orchestra. Even before his Master’s studies, he joined the orchestra academy at Zurich Opera House from 2014-2016. After completing his Masters in 2018, he worked as assistant principal bassoonist at the Freiburg Theatre, then in Bern with the Bern Symphony Orchestra as principal. As a guest he has also played in orchestras including the Bamberger Symphoniker, the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg, Malmö Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre Symphonique de Mulhouse, Musikkollegium Winterthur and the Orchestra della Svizzera İtaliana. Since 2020 he has held the position of principal bassoon in the Luzerner Sinfonieorchester.
