David Desimpelaere was appointed principal double bass with the ‘Luzerner Sinfonieorchester’ in 2019. Before he worked in Lucerne, David served as principal bass with the ‘Orchestra della Svizzera italiana’ and with the Brussels Philharmonic. As a guest principal bass, he is regularly invited in the London Symphony Orchestra, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and the Festival Strings Lucerne.
David Desimpelaere (°1991, Kortrijk Belgium) studied with Rinat Ibragimov at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and with Bozo Paradzik at the ‘Musikhochschule Freiburg’, where he received a soloist diploma with highest distinction. He previously completed a master’s degree at the Royal Brussels Conservatory of Music in the class of Frank Coppieters. Alongside his orchestra position, David is professor of double bass at the ‘Hochschule Luzern – Musik’ and the School of Arts Ghent.
David performs often as soloist and chamber musician. Together with his brother Erik (pianist/composer/conductor), he shares the stage regularly. In recent years they have been very active in recording and sharing it online via posts on YouTube, Spotify, and other platforms.
Additionally, Erik and David have released two CD’s, ‘Smile’ (Dynamic 2018) and ‘Reflections on a Song’ (Phaedra 2013) which were both received very positively by international critics.
David’s interest in new music for solo double bass has led to different world premieres in renowned concert venues.
