Sergej Bolkhovets

Sergej Bolkhovets is an ascending Swedish conductor with an already extensive international career as a violinist playing as a regular guest with a.o. Berliner Philharmoniker. Mr. Bolkhovets held the position of Assistant Conductor at the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra during the 2019-20 season, and 2020-22 he held the same position at the Gothenburg Opera.

In this season, apart from making his debut with the Luzerner Sinfonieorchester, Mr. Bolkhovets is debuting with the Swedish Royal Opera in a concert production as well as returns to the Swedish Chamber Orchestra for two productions. Furthermore, he will be the assistant conductor at the Bayerische Staatsoper for a new production of Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas & Schönberg’s Erwartung.

Mr. Bolkhovets concluded Gothenburg Opera’s last season by conducting two performances of Donizetti’s Viva la Mamma. On top of his engagements at the Gothenburg Opera, he debuted with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra and returned for two further productions. In recent seasons, he has worked with the Bamberger Symphoniker, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the Hallé Orchestra, Manchester Camerata and BBC Philharmonic. He has also collaborated with the Tonhalle Orchestra Zürich during a masterclass with David Zinman, and with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra as part of a conducting workshop. He has furthermore worked repeatedly with numerous other Swedish orchestras, such as the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, Norrlandsoperan, Gävle Symphony Orchestra, Västerås Sinfonietta and Dalasinfoniettan, as well as in the UK with Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Scottish Opera, London Sinfonietta and Red Note Ensemble.

Mr. Bolkhovets was a Conducting Fellow at the Verbier Festival in 2018, and held the positions of Junior Fellow in Conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music from 2016 to 2018, as well as the Leverhulme Conducting Fellowship at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2019–20 with Garry Walker as his main mentor. Mr. Bolkhovets also studied conducting at the University of Music “Franz Liszt” Weimar and at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. He furthermore participated in several conducting masterclasses with a.o. Paavo Järvi.

As a violinist, Mr. Bolkhovets studied at the Hochschule für Musik “Hanns Eisler” in Berlin with Ulf Wallin and Tabea Zimmermann, as well as at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm with Joakim Svenheden. As a soloist he has performed 20 violin concertos with a.o. Stockholm Royal Philharmonic and Bielefelder Philharmoniker. He has furthermore played in a total of 23 orchestras, including Berlin Philharmonic, Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester Berlin, Deutsche Sinfonieorchester Berlin, and Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and has been a guest concertmaster in approximately half of them, including at the Royal Swedish Opera, Frankfurter Oper- und Museumsorchester, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra.
