Der Doppelgänger (Lucia Ronchetti) – Premiere

What would happen if you met yourself on a walk one night?
In Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s “The Double”, the young civil servant Yakov Petrovich Golyadkin meets such a double. Not only does he appear in his apartment and take over his job, he also appears to be a better, more popular version of the confused protagonist. While the relationship between the two twin Golyadkins starts out friendly and brotherly, the Kafkaesque farce gradually comes to a head: the doppelganger is praised by his superior, acclaimed and admired by colleagues and friends, and in the end he apparently even stalks Klara Olsufievna, Golyadkin’s beloved. A rivalry develops between the two, reality and illusion become blurred – until Golyadkin is admitted to a psychiatric ward. But who is the real Golyadkin and who is the doppelganger?Based on Dostoyevsky’s early work “The Double”, author Katja Petrowskaja, who won the prestigious Ingeborg Bachmann Competition in 2013 and is now writing her first opera libretto, and composer Lucia Ronchetti devote themselves to psychological social satire in this opera. Lucia Ronchetti is one of the most renowned composers of our time. Her works have been premiered at the Staatsoper Berlin, the Semperoper Dresden, the Frankfurt Opera and the Nationaltheater Mannheim, among others. She is also currently the Artistic Director of the Venice Music Biennale.
