Event Description
Musical patchwork family on Mother’s Day
Our Mother’s Day concert proves that early and modern music need not be opposites, but can be combined in myriad ways to form a kind of patchwork family. Even the overtures in this stylistically diverse programme are not afraid to sit side by side. There is sighing and unrest in Giovanni Pergolesi’s classical family drama “Adriano in Siria”, and turmoil across the board in Domenico Cimarosa’s comedy about a secret marriage. The soloist Fazil Say knows no boundaries of style. Bach’s D minor concerto, with its idiosyncratic rhythms and motoric playfulness, is a golden opportunity for the pianist with his penchant for improvisation and jazz. Say also combines folk, piano romanticism and jazz in his own compositions – as here in the suite “Mother Earth” – to create his very own world music. Sergei Prokofiev’s “Symphonie classique”, in which the composer lovingly parodies the classical style of Joseph Haydn to create a prime example of “humour in music” (Leonard Bernstein), shows just how cheerfully you can go off the beaten track of style.
