Event Description
Rudolf Buchbinder knows his Beethoven inside out. With cyclical performances of the 32 piano sonatas in more than 50 cities worldwide, he has set standards. That he accepts the invitation of the Luzerner Sinfonieorchester in the middle of the Beethoven high season – on the exact 200th anniversary of Beethoven’s death – reflects his close connection with this orchestra.
On this symbolic evening, Buchbinder squares the circle: he offers a Beethoven encyclopedia in pocket format. In the early Sonata op. 2 no. 3, the lively musical wit of Joseph Haydn still echoes. The “Moonlight Sonata” and the late Sonata op. 109 show Beethoven on the path towards a Romantic sound world that is at once dreamlike and profoundly enigmatic.
The “Appassionata” forms the powerful conclusion: a pianistic elemental event whose passionately expansive virtuosity pointed the way towards the piano music of the nineteenth century.
