Cécile Marti (*1973)
“Seven Towers – 1” from the seven-part cycle Seven Towers for orchestra | 16’
Sergei Rachmaninow (1873 – 1943)
Symphony No. 2 in E minor, Op. 27 | 60’
One of the monumental focal points of this season is the joint concert in which the Luzerner Sinfonieorchester joins forces with the HSLU Symphony Orchestra. The programme makes double use of these large forces.
Sergei Rachmaninov’s Second Symphony continues the season’s Late Romantic line with Russian melancholy, wide soundscapes and broad melodic breath. Before it, Cécile Marti’s contemporary work “Seven Towers – 1” also moves on a large scale.
The Swiss composer studied composition at the Hochschule Luzern – Musik with Dieter Ammann and wrote her “Seven Towers” for an ensemble of around 120 musicians. Marti herself compared her sound sculptures to her work as a sculptor. With differently shaped courses of time, as if “carved in stone”, the music creates a vivid narrative suggestive power.
Two large-scale sound worlds meet in this concert: contemporary orchestral architecture and Rachmaninov’s Late Romantic expansiveness.
