Hard to believe: the Venetian Antonio Vivaldi composed almost 500 concertos, for a huge variety of solo instruments – 27 of them for cello and strings. An infinitely rich store of Baroque music – even if some, such as Igor Stravinsky, have mockingly said that Vivaldi wrote the same concerto 500 times. This cannot be the case, given that some of these concertos have become extremely popular Baroque hits all over the world – real ‘ear worms’. Most notably ‘The Four Seasons’ – four concertos, each dedicated to one of the four seasons. They come from the collection ‘Il cimento dellʼarmonia e dellʼinventione’, which translates as ‘The contest between harmony and invention’. There could be no better way to describe this music. The bliss of springtime, the oppressive heat of summer, the joyful autumn harvest, a world frozen by winter: all follow one another in thrilling succession, giving us a wonderfully illuminating window on the imaginative world of Baroque ‘musical painting’.

In a hit parade of the most played (and best-loved) classical works, Vivaldi’s ‘The Four Seasons’ would probably be right up there, in second or even first place.
