Piano Festival «Le Piano Symphonique»

Event Description

A grand festival finale with Daniil Trifonov: with his combination of tenderness and demonic energy, admired early on by Martha Argerich, the pianist extends his European roots towards Latin American-inspired dances from South America.

Trifonov is among the artists whose careers were accompanied early on by the Luzerner Sinfonieorchester. Martha Argerich once praised his playing as containing “tenderness and a demonic element” in a way she had “never heard before”. Now Trifonov returns to Lucerne as one of the defining pianists of his generation.

The programme offers insight into his personal and musical development. In the first part, European lines meet: Handel’s Suite No. 5 in E major, Stravinsky’s Piano Sonata and Schubert’s Wanderer Fantasy. From Baroque, Classical, Romantic and modern elements emerges a dramatic arc extending from clear formal awareness to eruptive fantasy.

After the interval, the view opens towards the New World. Trifonov leads the audience to Latin American-inspired works by Juan Francisco García, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Bullumba Landestoy, Alberto Ginastera and Camargo Guarnieri – and adds a personal accent with a Tango of his own.

With Villa-Lobos’ Bachianas Brasileiras No. 4, the circle closes: Bach, Brazil, dance and piano come together in a festival finale that once again illuminates the full range of Le Piano Symphonique.
