Event Description
The title “The Last Testament” suits this recital shortly before the end of the season. “All beginnings are easy,” Goethe warned, “but the final steps are the hardest and the rarest to be taken.” Hélène Grimaud devotes this evening to two piano sonatas that are not only their composers’ final contributions to the genre, but that reach such “final steps” in very different ways.
Beethoven’s boldly constructed Sonata op. 111 rises from fractured drama and rhythmic drive into mystical spheres. Franz Schubert’s Sonata in B flat major D 960 was composed shortly before his death and became a kind of legacy. In circling movements, it turns even the act of beginning into a Romantic mystery and repeatedly searches for an ending that seems to elude it.
Grimaud’s recital of beginning and ending takes place within the framework of “Le Piano Symphonique”. Together with Rudolf Buchbinder’s Beethoven evening and Martina Meola’s appearance as soloist with the Luzerner Sinfonieorchester, it shows how the piano festival radiates into the entire season.
