Event Description
Thursday’s chamber-music evening, under the title Martha Argerich & Friends, brings together musical companions as an artistic family across generations: Martha Argerich, Dong Hyek Lim, Janine Jansen, Mischa Maisky and further musicians.
The evening opens with Dong Hyek Lim in Beethoven’s Eroica Variations. Born in Seoul in 1984, the pianist is one of the artists who have repeatedly received important impulses in Martha Argerich’s artistic orbit. His playing combines technical brilliance with an immediate, often almost improvisatory presence.
At the centre of the first act is Robert Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E-flat major. Here, Martha Argerich appears with musicians with whom she shares a special chamber-musical alertness: Janine Jansen, Mischa Maisky and two further string players to be announced.
After the interval, the evening turns to two grand pianos: Martha Argerich and Dong Hyek Lim perform Dmitri Shostakovich’s Concertino in A minor and Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances. What appears in the orchestral version as splendour of sound becomes here, in the concentrated version for two pianos, an especially direct encounter of rhythm, energy and memory.
