Symphony Concerts

Event Description

Gustav Mahler’s Second Symphony is the flagship of this season. With this work, Chief Conductor Michael Sanderling sets course for monumental orchestral forces: more than 100 musicians, choir and two soloists come together in a large-scale undertaking of extraordinary dimensions – a journey of around ninety minutes from solemn funeral march to overwhelming resurrection finale.

With Anna Lapkovskaja in the “Urlicht” of the fourth movement, Lucerne’s star soprano Regula Mühlemann, the Zürcher Sing-Akademie and the Collegium Vocale zu Franziskanern Luzern, the season opens with a powerful vocal statement. In doing so, the Luzerner Sinfonieorchester places a clear emphasis on vocal-symphonic works, which run like a thread through the season.

The concert opens with a work by Swiss composer Andrea Lorenzo Scartazzini. His “Torso – Epitaph” is a contemporary response to Mahler’s Second Symphony: a tremendous orchestral intensification is drawn back into a lament – a prelude to the funeral rites with which Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony begins.

The opening concert thus becomes an exceptional event from the very start of the season: monumental, powerful and existential.
