The Romantic composers loved to create fantasies for the keyboard, and variation form offered the ideal scope for this. It was, however, rare for a female pianist celebrated throughout Europe to write variations on a work by her composer husband – specifically on the fourth movement of Robert Schumann’s «Bunte Blätter» , which Clara reworked into her own variations. Mendelssohn’s «Variations sérieuses» proved to be a pivotal work in the Romantic art of variation, and also one of his most popular compositions. On first hearing, Liszt’s ingenious B minor Sonata may give the impression of being a free fantasy and no longer firmly rooted in sonata form. He does in fact break out of the classical form and opens the way to an innovative romantic freedom of expression that looks far into the future. There is no doubt about it, this a singular masterpiece.
