Piano Festival «Le Piano Symphonique»

Event Description

One hallmark of Le Piano Symphonique is the concert evening that places chamber music and orchestral sound in a special relationship. Wednesday’s concert with the pianists Martha Argerich, Mikhail Pletnev and Yunchan Lim, together with the Luzerner Sinfonieorchester, is a prime example of this format.

In the first act, Martha Argerich joins the pianist and conductor Mikhail Pletnev at two grand pianos for her second appearance at the festival. Even this smallest of chamber-music formations takes on a symphonic dimension: Pletnev’s transcription of Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony combines the familiarity of a repertoire classic with the excitement of a world premiere.

The second act shows how the Luzerner Sinfonieorchester continues to develop partnerships with outstanding young artists. The soloist in Franz Liszt’s Second Piano Concerto is the South Korean pianist Yunchan Lim, who made his much-noted debut with the orchestra in 2025. In Liszt’s Second Piano Concerto, Yunchan Lim takes up the Romantic poetry of Schubert’s Unfinished and carries it forward into eccentric virtuosity.

The evening closes with Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances. His final work gathers memory, rhythmic energy and late-Romantic splendour – expanding the evening from the intimacy of two pianos to the full resonance of the orchestra.
