With festive baroque works for choir and orchestra, we ring in the Christmas season in the concert hall three days before Christmas Eve. Johann Sebastian Bach wrote the cantata “Darzu ist erschienen der Sohn Gottes” during his first Christmas season as Thomaskantor in Leipzig. It was performed in a church service on Boxing Day 1723, and was to be followed eleven years later by the “Christmas Oratorio”. Antonio Vivaldi’s Concerto for Two Trumpets was also written for performance in a festive service. In our Christmas carol concert, you can experience the trumpeters of the Luzerner Sinfonieorchester playing at the front of the orchestra for once. Handel’s “Messiah” has been performed, not in church services but in concert halls ever since it was written. With its “Hallelujah” and – hopefully – a jointly sung “Silent Night”, we will send you off into the Christmas season.
